Creating a collection of Glass

Contemporary cast glass is the modern evolution of one of the oldest glassmaking techniques. While the fundamental process of melting glass in a mould within a kiln has been used for thousands of years, contemporary cast glass artists push the boundaries of what the medium can express.

Contemporary cast glass sculpture is not limited by traditional forms or expectations. It explores themes of emotion, identity, nature, connection and the human experience. Modern artists use advanced kiln technology, refined mould-making techniques and a deep understanding of glass chemistry to create works that are visually stunning and conceptually rich.

My own work sits firmly within the contemporary cast glass tradition. I create sculptures that feature universal figures, simple geometry and harmoniously blended colourways. My themes centre on connection, stillness and the stories we carry as human beings. I am not interested in reproducing traditional forms. I want each sculpture to feel relevant, meaningful and alive.

What excites me about contemporary cast glass is that the medium is still being explored and discovered. There is no single way to do it, no limit to what can be attempted. Every artist brings their own voice and approach, and that diversity is what makes contemporary glass art such a dynamic and evolving field, both here in New Zealand and internationally.

Every cast glass artwork begins with an idea, often inspired by conversations, or observations during time away from the studio. From there I develop drawings and models before creating the final wax model for casting.

A refractory kiln mould is made and the glass is cast and then the mould and glass slowly cools over many weeks to relieve internal stresses. Once removed from the mould, each piece is carefully ground, polished and finished by hand. This slow process allows the unique qualities of light, colour and form to emerge.

My cast glass sculptures are original works of art.

Some pieces are completely unique, while others may be created as part of a carefully considered limited edition or series. Where an artwork is part of an edition, the edition size is clearly stated. Once an edition of any one colour combination is complete, no further works will be produced from that mould.

Because every cast and every hand-finishing process is slightly different, each sculpture possesses its own individual character.

Every unique sculpture is signed, coded and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, recording the title, date, edition (where applicable) and confirming that the work has been created in my Cambridge, New Zealand studio.

Each glass artwork from a unlimited series is also signed with an individual code. This is usually engraved on the base.

Many collectors enjoy collaborating on a sculpture created specifically for a particular space or to mark a significant occasion. Commissions begin with a conversation about scale, location and the ideas you would like the work to express.

Glass responds beautifully to changing natural light, and I am happy to offer guidance on the best placement for your sculpture.

Whether displayed on a pedestal, shelf or cabinet, careful positioning will allow the work to reveal different qualities throughout the day.

I like to make most of my glass sculptures to suit natural light but lighting can enhance a display for night-time viewing. I am happy to offer recommendations around this.

Cast glass is a durable material that requires very little maintenance.

A soft microfibre cloth and warm water is usually all that is needed to remove dust. Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals, and handle sculptures with care when moving them.

Care instructions are provided with every purchase.

My work is collected and shipped within New Zealand and internationally.

Each medium to large sculpture is professionally packed using custom protective materials to ensure it arrives safely. I work with experienced art shippers and can arrange fully insured delivery throughout New Zealand and overseas.

Commissioned works require additional time depending on their scale and complexity. As each glass piece is individually made, I will provide an estimated completion schedule before work begins and keep you informed throughout the process.

Yes. If you send me a photograph of the intended location, I can often provide guidance on scale and placement, and in most cases create a simple digital mock-up of the glass artwork in your home to help you visualise the piece in your space.

Yes. I offer an ‘on approval’ service. If you are not happy with the glass sculpture in your space, and return it within 7 days (in original condition and packaging) you will receive a full refund.
